I am Mrs. Emmalyn Tuñacao-Apas, 37 years old, married for almost 10 years now, a mother of 1, and representing Umapad, Mandaue City.
How did you get into pageantry?
Emmalyn: During my elementary years, I harbored a strong desire to pursue a career as a beauty queen. However, my inherent introversion and shyness deterred me from actively pursuing this aspiration.
I embarked on my journey into pageantry fueled by my own aspirations. I set a personal challenge before reaching the age of 40, motivated by a desire to fulfill a long-held dream and embrace new opportunities for growth and self-discovery.
What made you want to compete?
Emmalyn: The decision to compete in pageantry was driven by a blend of personal aspirations for growth, the challenge of stepping out of my comfort zone without competing with my fellow mother candidates, and a deep-seated desire to inspire others through my journey. My aim is to serve as a beacon of hope to those who may lack the courage to pursue their dreams, especially aspiring queen mothers. I want to convey the message that it’s never too late to turn dreams into reality and that motherhood should never be seen as a barrier to achieving one’s goal.
What does beauty mean to you?
Emmalyn: Beauty to me, is both inner and outer qualities. It’s embracing who you truly are and appreciating your uniqueness. It’s also about celebrating diversity and recognizing the beauty in every person, regardless of societal standards or norms.
If you win, how would you use your title to help others?
Emmalyn: If given the opportunity to win the Queen Mother of Cebu 2024 title, I am committed to using this platform to advance my advocacy, which focuses on empowering mothers to prioritize their mental health and well-being through self-love and self-care. This advocacy is deeply personal to me and resonates with countless women and mothers who may struggle to prioritize their own needs amidst their caregiving responsibilities. I believe that fostering self-acceptance, self-nurturing, and self-respect is not an act of selfishness, but rather a necessary foundation for leading a fulfilling and balanced life. Through this platform, I aim to inspire and support others on their journey to self-love and holistic wellness.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned from being in pageants?
Emmalyn: As a newcomer to the world of pageantry, I’ve cherished every moment of this journey as each experience has been a first for me. However, the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is the importance of authenticity and staying true to myself. In a world where external expectations and pressures can be overwhelming, staying grounded in my own values and beliefs has been my guiding principle. Through this journey, I’ve discovered the power of embracing my true self, flaws and all, and I’ve found that genuine authenticity resonates far more deeply than any facade. This lesson had not only shaped my pageant experience but has also left a lasting impact on how I navigate life beyond the stage.
How do you deal with people who might say mean things?
Emmalyn: Staying true to yourself is a powerful shield against negativity and criticism from others. When you are genuine and authentic, the opinions of others hold less weight because you are secure in your own identity and values. Taking ownership of your actions and learning from mistakes allows for growth and development, while also fostering resilience in the face of adversity. By embracing the mindset, you empower yourself to move forward with confidence, leaving behind any negativity or doubts that may try to hold you back.
Tell us about a time something amazing happened during a pageant
Emmalyn: Discovering a sense of sisterhood among my fellow mother candidates has been one of the most extraordinary aspects of my journey as a newcomer to the pageant scene. The bond that we’ve formed is truly irreplaceable, and the support and camaraderie we share have enriched my experience in ways I never could have imagined. Having confidants who understand and uplift me, especially during moments of uncertainty or self-doubt, has been invaluable. This sisterhood is not just a part of my pageant journey-it’s become a cherished aspect of my life.
What kind of person do you think does well in pageants?
Emmalyn: For me, the type of person who typically thrives in pageants is someone who possesses a combination of inner and outer beauty, confidence, intelligence, charisma, and genuine passion for their platform or advocacy. They are individuals who are comfortable in the spotlight and can effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. Ultimately, it’s someone who is authentic, compassionate, and dedicated to making a positive impact, both on and off the stage.
Being in a pageant means a lot of people are watching. How do you stay yourself through it all?
Emmalyn: Staying true to myself amidst the attention and scrutiny of being in a pageant is a conscious effort that involves staying grounded in my values, beliefs, and identity. By consciously cultivating self-awareness, authenticity, and self-care, I am able to navigate the demands of being in a pageant while staying true to myself.
What do you dream of doing in the future, pageant world or not?
Emmalyn: In the future, whether within the pageant world or not, my dream is to continue empowering and uplifting others, especially women and mothers, to realize their full potential and pursue their dreams.
