The Facts About Cleaning Your Ears

Many of told us never to use cotton swabs to clean our ears but we still do it.  The following explains how to properly clean your ears.

Cleaning the ears is important, but it’s crucial to do it safely to avoid injury or pushing wax deeper into the ear canal. Here’s the proper way to clean ears:

  1. Avoid inserting objects: Never insert cotton swabs, fingers, or any other objects into the ear canal. This can push wax further in, cause injury, or even damage the eardrum.
  1. Let the ears clean themselves: The ears are designed to clean themselves naturally. Wax, or cerumen, helps trap dirt and dust, moving it out of the ear canal gradually.
  1. External cleaning: Gently clean the outer ear with a washcloth. You can use a mild soap and warm water to remove dirt from the outer earlobe and behind the ear. Be careful not to push any dirt or wax further into the ear.
  1. Avoid excessive moisture: Too much moisture in the ear can lead to infection. After showering or swimming, tilt your head to each side to help water drain out of the ears.
  1. Seek professional help if necessary: If you have excessive earwax buildup or experience ear pain, itching, or hearing loss, consult a healthcare professional. They can safely remove earwax or address any underlying issues.

Remember, the ears are self-cleaning to some extent, and excessive cleaning can do more harm than good. If you’re concerned about your ear health or need assistance with ear cleaning, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider.
