How did you get into pageantry? What made you want to compete?
May: I started competing in beauty pageants during high school. Afterwards, my pageant handler encouraged me to broaden my involvement beyond school by engaging in competitions across various areas in Cebu. Initially, I didn’t have ambitions of being part of the pageant world. However, when my grandmother passed away, my family faced financial struggles. Seeing pageantry as a way to financially support my education, I reluctantly entered the scene.
Yet, through this journey, I discovered my potential and found a platform where I could grow and shine. It’s been an incredible journey, shaping me into who I am today. I’m grateful for every opportunity that’s come my way.
What does beauty mean to you? It’s more than just looks, right?
May: To me, beauty is more than just how someone looks. It’s about who they are inside. True beauty comes from being kind and respectful to others. When you’re careful with your words and considerate of other people’s feelings, it makes you even more beautiful.
What makes you special? What sets you apart from the other contestants?
May: What makes me stand out is my unique blend of skills, adaptability, and dedication. I approach every task with genuine passion, investing my heart and soul into what I do. I prioritize the well-being of those within any organization I join, ensuring I work with respect and integrity, while honoring the organization’s core values.
If you win, how would you use your title to help others?
May: As the next Queen Mother of Cebu, I view my title as a platform for positive change. I’ll advocate for education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for all, especially marginalized groups like women, children, and the elderly. With compassion and determination, I aim to leave a legacy of unity and progress in Cebu. Additionally, I’ll prioritize preserving our cultural heritage, ensuring Cebu’s traditions endure for future generations, fostering compassion and inclusivity for all Cebuanos.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned from being in pageants?
May: One of the best lessons from pageants is learning self-discipline and hard work through tough training. Also, I’ve improved my communication, confidence, and presentation skills. Connecting with sponsors has given me valuable networking opportunities and resources for personal and professional growth.
How do you deal with people who might say mean things?
May: I have a strong ability to control my emotions, which helps me handle people who say mean things. I usually approach situations logically, choosing not to waste my energy on negativity. I don’t dwell on others’ negative opinions, as long as I’m confident in my own beliefs and actions. Ultimately, their words don’t affect me.
Tell us about a time something amazing happened during a pageant!
May: Every stage of the screening process feels like a victory, and being selected as a finalist is a privilege. However, the most remarkable moment in my pageant experience is when I am unexpectedly crowned as the winner. It shows me the importance of never giving up, staying strong, and having confidence in myself, even when things seem tough. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most extraordinary moments happen when we least expect them. This experience fuels my passion for pageantry and inspires me to continue pursuing my dreams with unwavering determination.
What kind of person do you think does well in pageants?
May: Those open to training, constructive criticism, and resilience in the face of failure often shine brightest in pageants. Winning isn’t everything; it’s about rising from defeat with grace and determination. Each stumble is an opportunity for growth and fortitude. To conquer the pageant stage, one must embody strength, focus, and unwavering dedication. So, let resilience be your crown, determination your scepter, and excellence your legacy on the dazzling stage of pageantry.
Being in a pageant means a lot of people are watching. How do you stay yourself through it all?
May: Staying true to myself amidst the spotlight of a pageant involves remembering that my actions impact not just myself, but also my supportive glam team. I remain focused and determined to succeed, knowing that others are counting on me for support. This mindset keeps me grounded and committed to giving my best effort, ensuring that I uphold authenticity and integrity throughout the journey.
What do you dream of doing in the future, pageant world or not?
May: In the future, I aim to merge my nursing passion with mental health advocacy by creating programs for young mothers to prioritize their mental well-being. Additionally, I aspire to mentor young women in pageantry, promoting self-care and mental wellness to empower them in all aspects of life. Through mentorship, I hope to instill the importance of mental wellness and make a meaningful impact in the lives of both mothers and aspiring pageant contestants.
