Hyacinth is Candidate#25 in the Queen Mother of Cebu 2024 and she is representing Cebu City

How did you get into pageantry? What made you want to compete?

Hyacinth:  Last 2014, I made an impulsive decision to participate in Miss Carcar and took the screening test. To my amazement, I passed the screening test and was selected as one of the candidates. This was my first-ever pageant experience. Later on, I decided to join the Queen Mother of Cebu, although initially, I had some reservations. However, as I got to know more about the organization’s goals and aims, which is to highlight the importance of mothers and their contributions to the community, I became more interested. I also love the sisterhood and charitable causes that the organization supports, as they are very close to my heart. Ultimately, my main goal is to help the community in any way I can.

What does beauty mean to you? Is it more than just looks?

Hyancinth:  Beauty, to me, is much more than just what meets the eye. It’s something that goes far beyond skin-deep. It’s about the inner qualities of a person, such as their thoughts, values, and intentions. I truly believe that the most beautiful people are those who radiate positivity and compassion from within.

What makes you special? What sets you apart from the other contestants?

Hyacinth:  I stand out from the other candidates because of my unwavering positivity and authenticity. Unwavering positivity – I have an innate ability to see the good in every situation, no matter how challenging it may seem. Criticism is not a setback for me, but rather an opportunity to improve and become an even better version of myself. Authenticity – I have an unwavering commitment to being true to myself. I don’t put on a facade or pretend to be someone I’m not. Whether I’m in front of the camera or behind the scenes, you can expect nothing but the real me. I don’t need any bells and whistles to impress; my authenticity speaks for itself.

If you win, how would you use your title to help others?

Hyacinth: If I win the Queen Mother of Cebu, I intend to utilize my title to promote my advocacy for Mental Health Awareness. It’s an important issue that is often overlooked, but crucial for our well-being. I want to be the voice and take action to help people who are struggling with their mental health especially the mothers who are experiencing postpartum depression. I, myself, have personally experienced criticism and encountered mental health challenges. However, amidst all of it, I have realized that we are not alone in our struggles and conflicts in life. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult phase, know that you are not alone and I am here to offer my support. Let’s bring Mental Health Awareness into the spotlight.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned from being in pageants?

Hyacinth: The most exciting/coolest lesson I have learned from participating in a pageant is how to be authentic and self-sufficient. Additionally, thanks to this experience, I am learning how to apply my makeup on my own, even though I am not particularly into makeup. However, being a candidate in this competition has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and take pride in my accomplishments.

How do you deal with people who might say mean things?

Hyacinth: When someone says mean things to me, I am in control of how I react. It is up to me to decide whether or not to engage with them but I prefer to ignore them and move on. I value kindness and respect in all my interactions, and if someone is not willing to show me that, then I do not have to waste my time with them. By refusing to give them any attention, I am making it clear that their behavior is not acceptable and I will not tolerate it. Therefore, I always surround myself with positive people and avoid negativity in my life.

Tell us about a time something amazing happened during a pageant!

Hyacinth: Something amazing happened to me is when i decided to join Queen Mother of Cebu. I regained my self-esteem and redeemed myself. After being a full-time mom for almost four years, I struggled with my mental health due to a series of sad events in my life including postpartum depression. A month after I gave birth to my baby, my grandma died. Less than a year later, my mother also passed away. Soon after my mother’s death, my father had a new partner, which caused conflicts within my family. I felt very sad, alone and lost. I stayed with my in-laws temporarily, but I was criticized too. Without my husband by my side (he was assigned to work in Samar), nobody understood me. I really struggled and was devastated. I even reached the point of having suicidal thoughts. It was not easy, and I never opened up to my friends or family. However, my only hope that kept me going was my adorable child. With the presence of God and my positivity, I overcame those dark times in my life. Now, I am proud and loud to be one of the candidates for Queen Mother of Cebu. I am sharing my story not to be pitied but to inspire everyone especially other mothers who are facing mental health challenges. You are not alone in your battle. You can always count on me. It’s never too late to be back on track, remember your children need you. We need to fight and be strong for them.

What kind of person do you think does well in pageants?

Hyacinth: A person who does well in pageants is a person who is authentic, genuine and displays good sportsmanship. Being authentic and genuine in joining a pageant is crucial as it allows candidates to truly represent themselves and their values. Good sportsmanship contributes to a fair competition and fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among participants, creating a more fulfilling and enjoyable pageant experience for all.

Being in a pageant means a lot of people are watching. How do you stay yourself through it all?

Hyacinth: Staying true to yourself in the spotlight of a pageant requires self-awareness, self-confidence, and a strong sense of identity. It’s important to remember your values, beliefs, and unique qualities that make you who you are. Practice self-care, mindfulness, and positive self-talk to stay grounded and stay authentic in the midst of the attention. Surround yourself with supportive people who know and appreciate the real you. Remember that staying true to yourself is the key to shining brightly on stage and connecting with others in a genuine way.

What do you dream of doing in the future, pageant world or not?

Hyacinth: To be honest, I am still unsure whether I will pursue a career in the pageantry world or not we’ll see after the coronation night. But it is common to dream of a better future and to have various goals and aspirations. To achieve those dreams, it is important to set clear goals, stay focused, and take consistent steps towards fulfilling those aspirations. This will help us turn our dreams into reality.
