Beauty Queen Rose Nel

Rose Nel is candidate #8 in the Queen Mother of Cebu 2024 pageant and representing the municipality of Tuburan, Northern Cebu

How did you get into pageantry? What made you want to compete?

Rose Nel: I am inspired by my daughter, who won various events in their school, like Miss Intramurals. Ever since I was a child, I dreamt of becoming a beauty queen. However, because of my size, I was a bit insecure about joining. So when I read that plus-size individuals can join the QMC pageant, I didn’t think twice—I clicked the link right away and registered.

What does beauty mean to you? It’s more than just looks, right?

Rose Nel: Yes,it’s more than just good looks indeed. It is how you carry yourself, how you present yourself, and how you treat others with respect. For me, that is beauty.

What makes you special? What sets you apart from the other contestants?

Rose Nel: I have been battling with an autoimmune disease since I was in elementary school, but that didn’t stop me from joining pageantry and presenting myself to the public. I’m gutsy, and my goal really is to become a Hollywood superstar someday.

If you win, how would you use your title to help others?

Rose Nel: The platform itself has helped a lot of charities and organizations that cater to the needs of the people. However, if I win this pageant, I will use my voice and my crown to inspire fellow women and psoriasis patients out there to join pageantry and help the community.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned from being in pageants?

Rose Nel: We just had a quick thoughts workshop, and I’ve learned how to think quickly, how to think on your feet, and answer pageant questions as quickly and on point as you can. And for me, that is really cool since it was my first time attending a workshop like that.

How do you deal with people who might say mean things?

Rose Nel: I am somebody who doesn’t really care about what other people think, but if it’s something that affects my friends or family, I would approach them and tell them that it’s wrong to say mean things. They should just keep it to themselves if they can’t say anything good to anyone. Criticism, whether good or bad, is okay, but if it can really hurt someone, that’s a different story.

Tell us about a time something amazing happened during a pageant!

Rose Nel: During our press conference, we had little time to practice our blocking, but nonetheless, it was a smooth flow when we were out there presenting ourselves to the media. It was really amazing.

What kind of person do you think does well in pageants?

Rose Nel: That person should stand for what she believes in. She should be genuinely helpful to others, and she should have all the confidence in the world but still leave room for improvement and criticism.

Being in a pageant means a lot of people are watching. How do you stay yourself through it all?

Rose Nel: I just enjoy the moment and pray to our Almighty Father for a successful event.

What do you dream of doing in the future, pageant world or not?

Rose Nel: Yes, I still want to continue to be in the pageant world, inspiring other women, most especially plus-size women and persons who are suffering from psoriasis.
