Inexpensive Vegan Black Bean Hamburgers

Here’s a simple and inexpensive black bean vegan hamburger recipe with ingredients commonly found in the Philippines:

Black Bean Vegan Hamburger Recipe

Ingredients:

1 can (400g) black beans, drained and rinsed (or 1 cup cooked black beans)

1 small red onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 small carrot, grated

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (you can use pandesal crumbs if available)

1 tablespoon soy sauce (or toyo)

1 tablespoon tomato ketchup (or banana ketchup for a local twist)

1 teaspoon ground cumin (kumin)

1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil (or any cooking oil)

Burger buns (try to find vegan-friendly options)

Optional Toppings:

Sliced tomatoes

Lettuce leaves

Sliced cucumber or pickles

Vegan mayo or any preferred sauce

Instructions:

Prepare the Ingredients:

In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but with some chunks for texture.

Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, grated carrot, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, tomato ketchup, ground cumin, paprika (if using), salt, and pepper to the mashed beans. Mix well until everything is combined.

Form the Patties:

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties. If the mixture is too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs until it holds together well.

Cook the Patties:

Heat the olive oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties to the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and heated through.

Assemble the Burgers:

Toast the burger buns in the same pan or in a toaster if desired.

Place a cooked black bean patty on the bottom half of each bun.

Add your desired toppings such as sliced tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, and a dollop of vegan mayo or your preferred sauce.

Cover with the top half of the bun.

Serve and Enjoy:

Serve the black bean vegan burgers immediately with a side of fries or a fresh salad.

Notes:

You can find black beans in cans at major supermarkets like SM Supermarket or Robinsons Supermarket.

Breadcrumbs can be made by processing stale pandesal in a food processor or using store-bought breadcrumbs.

Soy sauce and tomato ketchup are staple ingredients in Filipino kitchens.

Ground cumin and paprika can be found in the spice section of most supermarkets.

For the burger buns, look for vegan options or check the ingredients list to ensure they don’t contain dairy or eggs.

You can also add vegan cheese slices if available but they can be pricey

Enjoy your homemade black bean vegan hamburgers!
